Bangladesh is planning to seek help from the law enforcement agencies of the United States and Nepal to put the prime suspect of ruling Awami League lawmaker Anwrul Azim Anar killing Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, who was reportedly a friend and business partner of Anwarul, on trial.

‘We are already working with the Indian police. Our investigators informed me that help from the US and Nepal law enforcement agencies will be needed as Shahin holds US citizenship and is staying there as he fled through Nepal after leaving the crime scene,’ home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Saturday.

After interrogating the suspects arrested and examining all the circumstances, investigators confirmed that Akhtaruzzaman (also known as Shahin Mia) is the key suspect in the brutal killing of the Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker.

Bangladesh’s first priority is to bring Akhtaruzzaman from the US, the minister said, adding that Bangladesh is now in touch with all the agencies concerned, including Interpol, to ensure justice for the family of Anwarul.

He said that of the three persons arrested in Dhaka—Amanullah alias Shimul Bhuiyan, Celesty Rahman and Faisal Ali alias Saji— two have criminal backgrounds while the Bangladesh police is now checking Celesty’s background.

Besides, the Indian police are still searching for the body of slain Anwarul who was believed to be killed in a New Town flat in Kolkata where he travelled on May 11 and went missing on May 14.

The Bangladesh police have decided to send a three-member team to Kolkata to investigate the matter, while a four-member team of Kolkata police is now in Bangladesh.

The Indian media reported that the Criminal Investigation Department of Kolkata police conducted several drives in different waterbodies since Thursday night but did not find any parts of Anwarul’s body.

The Kolkata CID carried the search taking with them Jihad Howladar, a Bangladeshi citizen and a butcher by profession, who is now under the police custody over murder links.

At a press conference at his office Dhaka metropolitan police additional commissioner (detective) Harun-or-Rashid said that the killers wanted to get money through hundi after holding Anwarul hostage for two days.

Quoting the investigators, he also said that the killers first chloroformed Anwarul, and when he did not regain consciousness, they decided to dismember his body.

‘The murderers wanted to take Anwarul’s nude photos while he was unconscious. They wanted to hold him hostage and take money through hundi. Two days later the murder was planned,’ Harun said.

‘When Anwarul was unconscious, the killers dismembered his body in such a way that it was difficult to identify it as human remains,’ he said.

He said that Shimul Bhuiyan alias Amanullah, who allegedly led the killing mission, carried out the entire plan after mastermind Aktaruzzaman returned to Dhaka on May 10.

Harun also said that Aktaruzzaman left Dhaka on May 20 for the US via Delhi, Kathmandu and Dubai.

Quoting a senior police officer in West Bengal, Delhi-based Hindustan Times reported that Bangladesh does not have any extradition treaty with the US government but India has.

‘We are planning to extradite Shahin to India because the crime occurred in our state,’ the police officer told the media.

It reported that West Bengal CID sources said that Anwarul was first strangulated after which his body was chopped into pieces by a Bangladeshi butcher.

Later, butcher Jihad along with two others dumped the pieces of the flesh in different areas in South 24-Pargana district. His body parts are yet to be found.

According to media reports, the West Bengal Police are searching for the dismembered body of Anwarul on the basis of the information given by Jihad. There searched Sanjiva Garden in South 24-Pargana on Saturday.

Jihad, a resident of Khulna, was arrested on Thursday from Bangaon border on suspicion of involvement in Anwarul murder.

Later on Friday, being remanded in custody on the orders of the court, he confessed to the detectives of the Kolkata CID that he dismembered the body and hid it in the flat after the murder.

According to the information given by Jihad after his arrest, the CID conducted an extensive search in Bhangar-Polerhat area of South 24 Pargana adjacent to Kolkata on Thursday night to recover the remains of Anwarul.
