The Jahangirnagar University authorities on Wednesday fined a female student Tk 10,000 over lodging an allegedly false sexual harassment complaint with the university administration.

The authorities also served a cautionary notice to the student, Nabila Islam of management studies department under the 2021–22 academic session, following an investigation.


An office order signed by JU registrar Abu Hasan said that the university’s highest decision-making body, the syndicate, reached the decision about the punishment in a meeting on the day with university vice chancellor Nurul Alam in chair.

According to the office order, the student misguided the investigation team formed in this regard by plotting a fabricated event.

The female student lodged reportedly a false complaint with the university proctorial office, sparking clash between two halls of male students, the office order read.

As the false complaint caused the two halls to descend into a clash, the authorities decided to impose the punishment, it added.

When contacted, Nabila told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘I admit my mistakes and will pay the fine. I complained to take a personal revenge.’

Earlier on July 14, 2023, Nabila complained that some residents of the Shaheed Rafiq Jabber Hall ‘eve teased’ her on the campus.

On the same day, Nabila’s department-mates along with some residents of the Rabindranath Tagore Hall locked into clash with the residents of Shaheed Rafiq Jabber Hall following the complaint filed by Nabila.
