
The Dhaka Special Judge鈥檚 Court-5 on Tuesday sentenced Nazrul Islam and his wife Rabeya Aktar to life term imprisonment in a case filed over killing their house help Shilpi Begum in 2006.
Judge Md Iqbal Hossain pronounced the verdict in presence of the two convicts. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each and said that, in case of default to pay the fine, they would have to suffer six more months in jail.
A total of six, out of 22 prosecution witnesses, testified before the court in the case.
Their trial began on April 26, 2007.
According to the case document, the then 11-year-old Shilpi used to work as a domestic help at the residence of Nazrul on North Kamalapur Kabi Jasim Uddin Road under Motijheel police station.
On February 22, 2006, the victim鈥檚 mother came to know through an anonymous phone call that her daughter was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
On information, she went to the DMCH and found her daughter admitted there with serious injuries. She learned from the people that the accused hit her daughter on the head with an iron rod and a stick after closing the door of their house, according to the case statement.
Shilpi died three days after the incident while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Later, the victim's father, Sirajul Islam, filed a case with Motijheel police station against the couple.
On April 30, 2006, police submitted a charge sheet accusing them.
