The police on Thursday stopped agitating workers of closed Denis Knitwear at national press club from marching towards the prime minister鈥檚 office at noon.

A team of leaders from the agitating workers was, however, allowed to go to the PMO to submit a memorandum.

The owners of Denis Knitwear in Gazipur closed the factory without giving wage and benefits of its workers.

More than 500 workers of the factory have been holding sit-in programme in front of Srama Bhaban at Bijoynagar for the last five days, demanding reopening of the factory after the factory owners did not attend a meeting, called on May 5 to resolve the crisis.

On Thursday morning, the workers of the factory held a rally in front of the national press club, where Bangladesh Garment and Sweaters Workers Trade Union Centre general secretary KM Ruhul Amin announced that the workers of the factory would continue their sit-in programme in front of Srama Bhaban until the problem was resolved.

Chaired by worker of the factory Luky Akter, the rally was addressed by, among others, garment workers leader Hafizul Islam, Jalal Hawlader, Sohel Rana.

The sit-in programme in front of the Srama Bhaban was continuing until Thursday evening, a press release said.
