
The Anti-Corruption Commission has filed three separate cases against the wife and two children of late Ahsan Habib Kamal, former mayor of Barishal City Corporation for acquiring around Tk 6.5 crore beyond their known income sources.
The ACC’s Barisal district office assistant director Abul Qayyum Hawladar filed the cases on Monday.
The accused are – wife of late Ahsan Habib Kamal, also the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Barishal city unit former president, Hosne Ara Begum and his son Kamrul Ahsan Rupam and daughter Maliha Sabreen.
Abul Qayyum said that in a case, Hosne Ara was accused of acquiring illegal wealth of around Tk 2.93 crore along with hiding information of around Tk 64.2 lakh of wealth.
In another case, Kamrul has been accused of giving false and baseless information, including hiding information of wealth worth Tk 4.12 lakh Also, allegations of illegal wealth acquisition of around Tk 1.89 crore have been made against him.
Another case was filed against Maliha on charges of concealing the assets of Tk 2.82 lakh and acquiring wealth of around Tk 1.58 crore.
Abul Qayyum said that the ACC issued asset declaration notices in 2022 as the initial investigation found the allegations to be true.
In July of that year, the family members of late Ahsan Habib, who was the acting mayor of BCC from July 25, 2002 to April 14, 2003, submitted the wealth statement.Â
In the 2013 election, Ahsan Habib was elected mayor as a candidate of BNP. He died on July 30, 2022.
