
Bangladesh Hawkers Union leaders on Monday at a protest rally in Dhaka called on the government to stop eviction of hawkers in Dhaka city without providing them with alternative job or workplace.
The Bangladesh Hawkers Union organised the rally in front of the National Press Club protesting against the steps of Dhaka Metropolitan Police evicting the hawkers from different footpaths in the city.
Former president of Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim said at the rally that Awami League government was seizing basic rights of hawkers evicting them from Dhaka city roads without creating their alternative job.
He called on the government to stop the evictions immediately until creation of their alternative work places.
President of the organisation Abul Hashim Kabir who chaired the rally said that police were leading repressions on the hawkers and increased collecting extortions from the hawkers.
General secretary Hazrat Ali called on the hawkers to be united against police repressions.
Central leaders of the organisation Abul Kalam Azad, Monzur Moin, Afsar Uddin, Anis Patwari and others spoke at the rally.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
Several hundred hawkers from Dhaka city attended the programme.
