
The prices of most vegetables went up on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday.
Retailers said that the prices of vegetables started to soar as the production of vegetables lowered after the winter, and also the demand for vegetables surged due to Ramadan, the fasting month of the Muslims.
Aubergine sold for Tk 60-80 a kilogram, bitter gourd was selling at Tk 80-100 per kg, beans at Tk 50-60 per kg, cucumber at Tk 40-50 a kg, and tomatoes at Tk 20-40 per kg.
Cabbage and cauliflower were available at Tk 30 and 50 apiece, while radish was selling at Tk 40 per kg.
According to the retailers, prices of most vegetables witnessed an increase of Tk 10-20 per kilogram over the past week.
They said that the supply of vegetables decreased in the markets as the production of the items decreased, while the demand for vegetables surged on the occasion of Ramadan.
Lemons, a Ramadan essential, saw a sharp price increase, selling at Tk 100-120 per hali (four pieces), increasing by Tk 20-40 over the past two weeks.
Potatoes sold for Tk 20-30 a kilogram on the day.
The prices of broiler chicken decreased a little and the item sold for Tk 200-210 a kilogram on Friday.
Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 310–320 a kilogram in the city on Friday.
The price of eggs stayed the same and the item sold for Tk 42-46 a hali (four pieces) in the city over the week ending Friday.
Chickpeas, another Ramadan staple, were sold at Tk 105-110 per kg, same as the last week.
The prices of onion also remained similar over the week and the local variety of the item sold for Tk 40-45 a kilogram.
During the visits, the ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· observed that the soya bean oil supply in the kitchen markets came to normalcy.
The prices were as the govt set, Tk 175 for a one litre bottle.
Red lentil prices remained high, with the coarse variety selling at Tk 120-125 per kg, the medium variety at Tk 130 per kg, and the fine variety at Tk 135-140 per kg on Friday.
Various rice varieties were priced between Tk 55 and Tk 100 per kg, with fine Miniket rice selling at Tk 80-82 per kg.
Coarse and medium-quality rice was available at Tk 55-65 per kg on Friday.
