The prices of broiler chicken and eggs went up while most other commodities, including rice, potatoes and onions, remained pricy on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday.

Traders said that the prices of broiler chicken and eggs increased on both the wholesale and retail markets due to a supply shortage as flood damaged many farms in the country.


According to officials of the Department of Livestock Services, nearly 500 poultry farms were affected by the recent flood.

The price of broiler chicken increased by Tk 10-20 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 170-180 a kilogram on Friday.

Locally bred hens sold for Tk 600–650 a kilogram on the day.

Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 330–350 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

The price of eggs increased by Tk 4-6 a hali (four pieces) and the items sold for Tk 52-54 a hali in the city over the week ending Friday.

The prices of rice remained unchanged over the week and its coarse varieties sold for Tk 54–56 a kilogram on Friday.

Lower-grade Miniket sold for Tk 67-72 a kilogram over the week.

The fine variety of Miniket sold for Tk 78–82 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80–85 a kilogram on Friday.

The prices of some of the vegetables remained stable on the city markets on Friday.

Aubergine sold for Tk 60-80 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 30-35 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, gourd for Tk 50-60 apiece, okra for Tk 40-50 a kilogram and pointed gourd for Tk 40-50 a kilogram on the day.

The price of green chillies decreased by Tk 40-50 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 200-220 a kilogram in the city on Friday.

Potatoes sold for Tk 55-60 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of onions also remained high over the week and the local variety of onions sold for Tk 110-120 a kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 110-120 a kilogram on the day.

The prices of fish remained unchanged on the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.

Rohita sold for Tk 300-400 a kilogram and Katla for Tk 300–380 a kilogram, depending on size and quality.

Pangas sold for Tk 200–220 a kilogram and Tilapia for Tk 220–240 a kilogram on Friday.

The price of beef also remained high and the item sold for Tk 730-750 a kilogram on the city’s kitchen markets over the week ending Friday.

Mutton sold for Tk 1,000-1,100 a kilogram on the day.
