FIDE Master Subrota Biswas emerged champion of the GM Zia Memorial 2025 chess competition after beating International Master Minhaz Uddin Ahmed in the ninth and final round at the Bangladesh Chess Federation Hall Room in the city on Friday.

Subrota earned eight points from nine matches in the event, organised by the Bangladesh Chess Federation in honour of late Grand Master Ziaur Rahman, who passed away on July 5, 2024 after suffering a heart attack during the National Chess Championship.


FM Tahsin Taswar Zia, son of GM Zia, finished as runners-up, winning against IM Kushagra Mohan in the tie-breaker after they tied on identical 7.5 points each.

Tahsin beat FM Sheikh Nasir Ahmed, while Indian IM Kushagra beat Candidate Master Silwal Purushottam of Nepal in the ninth round.

India鈥檚 IM Subhayan Kundu, Bangladesh鈥檚 IM Manon Reja Neer and Anata Chowdhury placed fourth to sixth, respectively, after the tie-breaker, as the three were tied on equal 6.5 points each.聽

In the final round, Neer beat WCM Warsia Khusbu, Subhayan beat Rishon Thapa, and Anata defeated Tashriq Saihan Shan.

A total of 64 players, including six players from India and Nepal, took part in the week-long competition, which offered a purse of Tk 4 lakh as prize money.
