Bangladesh women’s chess team jumped 17 places up from 57th to 40th after their seventh round win over Dominican Republic by 2.5-1.5 points in the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, on Wednesday.

Bangladesh earned nine points from seven rounds to hold 40th place among 170 countries.


This was Bangladesh’s  second successive victory in the competition, as they earlier beat Uruguay by 3.5-0.5 points in the sixth round on Monday.

In the women’s section on Wednesday, WFM Wadifa Ahmed and WIM Rani Hamid won against Gonzalez Peguarpo Mary Loly and WCM Ramirez Luzon Franchesca, respectively.

WFM Noshin Anjum drew against WFM Castillowon Pena Patricia Evarista, while WCM Walijah Ahmed lost to WFM Diaz Cesar Wilsaida Pieranlly.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh men’s team was on eight points after the seventh round with a 2-2 draw against Slovakia in the open section.

They dropped 12 places to hold 73rd position from 61st among 189 countries.

IM Fahad Rahman beat GM Gazik Victor of Slovakia, while GM Niaz Murshed and FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia drew against IM Druska Juraj, IM Kostolansky Sebastian Lukas, and GM Enamul Hossain Razib lost to IM Sahidi Samir.
