Both Bangladesh men’s and women’s teams suffered defeat in the second round of the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, on Thursday.

The men’s team lost to Vietnam by 3.5-0.5 points in the open section, while the women’s team lost to Romania by 3-1 points.


In the second round of the open section, Grandmaster Niaz Murshed drew against FIDE master Banh Gia Huy. Among the other Bangladesh campaigners, International master Fahad Rahman, FIDE master Manon Reja Neer, and GM Enamul Hossain Razib lost to GM Li Quang Liem, GM Li Tuan Minh, and GM Tran Tuan Minh.

In the women’s category, WFM Noshin Anjum and WFM Wadifa Ahmed drew against Romanian IM Bulgama Irina and WIM Ciolacu Alessia Mihaela, respectively.

WCM Walijah Ahmed and WCM Nusrat Jahan Alo lost to WGM Voicu Jagodzinsky Carmen and WIM Lehaci Miruna Daria, respectively, in the other games.

However, in the first round on Wednesday, Bangladesh men’s beat Lesotho by 4-0 points in the open section while their female team won against Saint Lucia by the same margin.
