
Twenty undergraduate students from various departments under the faculty of environment and natural sciences at Gazipur Agricultural University have recently been selected for the Nagao Natural Environment Foundation scholarship, an international award funded by the Japan-based organisation.
To mark the occasion, a check distribution ceremony was held in the Academic Council Room of the university in Gazipur on Sunday, said a press release.
Presided over by Professor Md Amzad Hossain, coordinator of the NEF Bangladesh committee and director of international affairs at the GAU, vice-chancellor of the university, Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman, attended the event as chief guest and distributed the scholarship cheques to the recipients.
The Nagao NEF scholarship is awarded to students committed to studying and conducting research in areas such as environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, sustainable agriculture and forest management all while remaining in their home countries.
Through receiving this international award, GAU students have taken a significant step forward in becoming future leaders in global environmental research and conservation.
Each awardee will receive an annual stipend of Tk 37,000 for a period of three years. GAU treasurer Professor Md Safiul Islam Afrad was present as special guest at the event.
Also in attendance were deans from various faculties, GAU proctor Professor Mohammad Saiful Alam, senior faculty members and the scholarship recipients.
Professor Mustafizur Rahman said, ‘This achievement by our students brings immense pride to Gazipur Agricultural University. It demonstrates that we are not only excelling in theoretical knowledge but also taking a leading role in practical, research-based contributions to environmental conservation.’
He further urged students to become more actively involved in safeguarding the environment for a sustainable future.
