Vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam at a programme at the BMU in Dhaka on Wednesday said that BMU was committed to providing safe healthcare services across Bangladesh.

He made the remarks at the programme on the occasion of World Patient Safety Day, which was jointly organised by the BMU, the Directorate General of Health Services and the World Health Organisation, said a press release.


‘BMU is committed to providing safe healthcare throughout the country in the coming days by creating public awareness to make the healthcare system safe for patients, increasing the efficiency of health workforce, becoming a role model by setting an example in preventing infection,’ he said.

Special assistant to the chief adviser for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Professor Dr Md Sayedur Rahman was present as chief guest at the event.

He said that the BMU should set an example in how to ensure safe healthcare to patients not only in its own institution but also in all hospitals, institutes and related institutions at the district and upazila levels of the country.

‘BMU should be a guide in providing safe healthcare to the country’s patients. The people of the country have high expectations from BMU,’ he added, mentioning that several things were important to ensure patient safety, safe healthcare or medical services.

In this regard, attention should be paid to creating safe doctors and nurses, ensuring evidence-based treatment in accordance with international standards, giving importance to disease prevention, protecting people from becoming patients by preventing preventable diseases, creating guidelines and following them, adhering to SOPs, he said.

BMU pro-VC Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad presented an article on ‘infection prevention and control’ at the event.

BMU pro-VC Professor Dr Mujibur Rahman Hawlader called for ensuring patient safety at all levels of healthcare.

Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid, president of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh, said that patient safety was the right of patients. ‘It is possible to ensure this with the efforts of all concerned, including doctors and nurses.’

Organised with the theme of safe treatment and service for every newborn and every child, BMU also organised a video documentary on the medical services at the event.
