Islamic University vice-chancellor Professor Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah has said that the long-awaited election to the university’s central students’ union will be held within 15 days after the draft ordinance is passed, which is expected by November.
The VC made the announcement after he had met a delegation of the ‘Movement for IUCSU’ platform at his office on Monday night.
‘The atmosphere in other universities over student union elections has encouraged us. Our target is to complete the legal process by November and conduct the polls soon,’ he said.
‘This will not only establish a democratic culture, but also create a permanent structure to discipline student politics and resolve most of the university’s problems,’ he said.
He further said that a committee of teachers and student representatives would be formed to draft the IUCSU constitution, which would later go through the syndicate, the University Grants Commission, and the education ministry before receiving presidential approval as an ordinance.
The VC also noted budgetary challenges, saying that a legal entity was necessary for sustainable allocation of funds and smooth organisational activities.
‘Without a legal entity, the structure cannot function permanently,’ he observed.
He further assured that initiatives would be taken to ensure justice in the Sajid murder case, probe the July clashes, and block fake pages using IU’s name and logo.
Among others, the university’s pro-vice chancellor Professor M Yeaqub Ali, acting registrar Professor M Monjurul Haque, proctor Professor M Shahinuzzaman, student adviser Professor M Obaidul Islam, and members of the Movement for IUCSU were present on the occasion.
On Sunday, the platform conducted a campus-wide campaign to mobilise students in support of forming the union.
