Eleven students of Dhaka University’s statistics and Institute of Statistical Research and Teaching who secured 1st place in the master’s examinations from 2017 to 2023 received the Kazi Motahar Hossain awards at a programme at the auditorium of DU Teachers-Students Centre on Wednesday.

Dhaka University vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan presented the medals and certificates to the students as chief guest at the programme, said a press release.


On the occasion of the 128th birth anniversary of National Professor Kazi Motahar Hossain, the department of statistics of Dhaka University, ISRT and the Kazi Motahar Hossain Foundation jointly organised this function.

Presided over by Professor Abdul Majed, president of Kazi Motahar Hossain Foundation; chairman of the department of statistics Professor Zafar Ahmed Khan spoke as special guest at the programme.

Professor of the department of Bangla Bhishmadeb Chowdhury delivered a memorial lecture at the programme, which was conducted by Kazi Rawnak Hossain, general secretary of the Kazi Motahar Hossain Foundation.

Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan paid tribute to the memory of the national professor and said that he was a renowned and versatile personality of this subcontinent. ‘He had every quality of a philosopher. He created an extraordinary combination between science and art.’

‘Along with the pursuit of knowledge, he also led many large-scale social movements. He taught us the tradition of taking everyone in the society with him. This is very necessary for us at this moment.’

The award-winners are statistics Umme Naima Islam, Jannatul Ferdous, Md Mudassir Hossain Aqib, Trishna Saha, Tasmia Afrin Emma and Shayera Akhter and ISRT students Russell Bishwas, Awan Afiaz, Tasneem Ara, Tariqul Islam and Md Muhitul Alam.

At the event, scholarships were awarded to 13 students who secured first place in the BSc honours examination.
