To mark the anniversary of the July uprising, the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh organised an event titled Remembering the July at the ULAB in Dhaka on Friday.
The event paid tribute to the fearless participants of the student-led mass uprising through the screening of several documentary films and an open discussion session, said a press release on Sunday.
ULAB students, faculty members, administrative representatives participated in the discussion.
The documentaries screened at the event explored several key aspects, including the background of the 2024 student movement, narratives of those killed and injured during the protests, propaganda published by Indian media about the July events, and the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad.
Professor Sumon Rahman, dean of the school of social sciences, said, ‘July 2024 marked a rupture in the historical continuum of oppressive state systems. Our young generation bravely challenged the repressive rule of the Awami League.’
He added that the movement began at the University of Dhaka, but at a critical moment, students from private universities unexpectedly joined it. ‘Abrar Fahad’s sacrifice accelerated and made July inevitable.’
‘These documentaries will keep our resistance consciousness alive—because to truly taste freedom, we still have a long way to go,’ he mentioned.
ULAB’s registrar, retired lieutenant colonel Md Faizul Islam expressed heartfelt gratitude to all guests, students, faculty members, and the administration.
