Vice-chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Professor ABM Badruzzaman has urged the people of the country to refrain from all kinds of barbarity and immoral activities to fulfil the purpose of those killed and injured in the July uprising in the past year.

He made the urge while delivering speech as chief guest at a two-day programme on the July uprising at the BUET concluded on Wednesday, said a press release on Friday.


‘We have seen barbarity; we have seen incidents like beating to death. We have to refrain from all kinds of barbarity and immoral activities to achieve the objectives of the people killed and injured in the uprisinf,’ said the VC.

Professor Badruzzaman also stressed, ‘We wanted to create a moral society and we have to move forward on that path. Otherwise, the self-sacrifice of the people will have no value.’

Mentioning that if the purposes of the uprising are not expressed in actions, it will be failed, the BUET VC said, ‘We have got the second chance. The third time we may not get that opportunity.’

Addressing the BUET students, he said, ‘After the beating of a businessman to death a few days ago, a procession was organised by the BUET and the DU to protest, which is a proper act of protest. But using obscene language in protest is not desirable in any way.’

He also urged all to work for the development of the country.

BUET pro-VC Professor Abdul Hasib Chowdhury delivered the welcome speech and shared his experience of the uprising at the programme.

He said that in the past 75 years, no other country in South Asia had witnessed five mass uprisings except Bangladesh.

Mentioning the War of Independence, Professor Abdul Hasib said, ‘History says that when the government of a country considers the entire people as its enemy, that government cannot survive.’

Referring to BUET students, he said, ‘The power that lies in true speech, obscene language does not have that power. Powerless people want to express their anger through their obscene words, BUET students cannot do this.’

At the event, BUET faculty deans, teachers, students, officials and employees shared their memories and experiences of the July uprising.

A documentary of the events of BUET during the July uprising was screened at the event. Besides, a cultural programme was staged at the event.
