Petroleum and mining engineering students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Sunday staged demonstrations and locked the main entrance to the department building protesting at the appointment of a teacher and demanding cancellation of his appointment.

The PME students boycotted scheduled classes from the morning and then started staging demonstrations, including a sit-in and rally, in front of the department building after locking its main entrance at around 12 noon to press home the demand, campus sources said.

The agitating students participated in the sit-in carrying different placards that read different slogans in support of their demands and chanted slogans, the sources said.

Officials in the SUST administration told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Md Tajbiul Islam was appointed as a lecturer to the department in June past year though he could not fulfil the required academic qualifications.

After the July uprising, the SUST administration formed a committee to probe into the allegations brought against him and the committee found the allegations true and submitted its report to the university authorities in this regard. Since then Tajbiul had remained absent in his workplace.

Following the probe report, the university syndicate decided to stop giving him salaries and other allowances, serve a ‘show-cause notice’ on him asking him to explain why he would not be sacked from the job, the officials said.

Instead of implementing the Syndicate decisions, the university administration issued a letter in the past week asking Tajbiul to join his job, they said.

PME master’s student Fahim told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they announced that they would enforce a complete shutdown to force the university administration to  meet their demand.

Contacted, the PME head professor Mokhlasur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Tajbiul had been recruited as a lecturer though his academic qualification was less than the required level.

SUST registrar Syed Salim Md Abdul Kadir was not available for a comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.
