Education adviser Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar at a programme in Dhaka on Wednesday urged the young generation to make a world full of justice, peace and tolerance.

He made the urge at the 24th convocation of the East West University at Aftabnagar.

While awarding degrees to 2,885 students of undergraduate and graduate programmes at the convocation, CR Abrar explained how advanced technologies were creating new opportunities for the youths.

He also warned that intolerance, ultranationalism and blinkered attitudes were challenging for the greater achievements of the country. ‘I urge the young generation to fight these challenges with a view to making a world full of justice, peace and tolerance.’

The convocation speaker, Syed Nasim Manzur, managing director of Apex Footwear Limited, said that the future of the country in the next 25-30 years depended on the educated and skilled young people.

He urged the new graduates to be prepared for entrepreneurship instead of looking for jobs, advising them to get ideas about different stages of any business before starting it. ‘Otherwise, it might incur loss.’

Considering China as a role model, he opined, ‘Along with starting big companies, it is also possible for us to contribute to the GDP growth of our country by initiating small companies.’

Special guest of the event, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh chairman, Professor SMA Faiz, mentioned that the UGC had changed its approach and attitude to ensure a better environment for education in Bangladesh.

The chairperson of the board of trustees and founder vice-chancellor of the EWU Professor Mohammed Farashuddin demanded a standard education commission in the country along with an up-to-date and innovative education policy.

He addressed the new graduates to be more careful about utilising the wealth and opportunities available in the country to challenge the belief that Bangladesh always relied on imports.

The EWU VC Professor Shams Rahman emphasised graduates’ technological and communication skills as well as their creativity to make the population of the country a powerhouse.

He also encouraged the graduates to go beyond conventional structure and to create something new, using their innovative power.

Among others present in the convocation programme were national security adviser and chief adviser’s high representative Khalilur Rahman, VCs of different universities, cultural figures, the EWU members of the board of trustees, pro-VC, treasurer, registrar, deans, chairpersons, faculty members, staff, graduates, and their parents.
