Bangladesh Bank executive director Md Mezbaul Haque resigned on Tuesday citing personal reasons.
He has been mired in controversies after the government found his involvement in foreign reserve heist and introduction of Binimoy platform and providing undue facilities to Nagad.
Following political shift on August, his position had become contentious, leading to his transfer from the headquarters to the Rajshahi office.
‘Citing personal reasons, Mezbaul Haque has submitted his resignation,’ Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan told reporters on Tuesday.
His resignation adds to a series of leadership changes since August 2024, when Ahsan H Mansur was appointed governor.
After the fall of the Awami League government, a number of top officials at Bangladesh Bank, including governor, two deputy governors, the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), and a policy adviser, were forced to resign under pressure, due to their alleged involvement with banking irregularities.
Md Mezbaul Haque was promoted to executive director in December 2022, the same day he was appointed as the central bank’s spokesperson.
For years, he had headed the Payment Systems Department and was closely involved with the digital initiatives launched under the Awami League government.
