Country manager of the Mastercard in Bangladesh Syed Mohammad Kamal on Thursday said that the American multinational payment card services corporation was working to build a less cash Bangladesh.

While speaking at the award giving ceremony of the Mastercard’s spend and win campaign titled Stunning Sydney 2024 held in the capital, he also said that they would promote digital payment more.


The campaign of Mastercard was live from May 21 to June 30, and offered exciting rewards on spends on Mastercard credit, debit and prepaid card during the festive month of Eid-ul-Adha, incentivising digital payments, said officials.

Mastercard director Zakia Sultana Laboni said that the ‘Stunning Sydney’ was a starting, adding that it would come up with more offers for its cardholders.

The Mastercard, now active in more than 210 countries or territories, have already offered travel to its user to 20 countries, said officials.

Mastercard director Sohail Alim expected that the banks would bring exciting offers to their customers and encourage them to use Mastercard in payments.

Syed Kamal said that at present 10 per cent payment happened cashless in the country. ‘Before cashless transition, the country needs to have 50 per cent digital payment. For cashless target to be achieved Bangladesh needed 90 per cent digital payment.’

He said that digital payment impacted for given situation in the past two months. ‘But the situation has been changing. In the coming month, it would increase,’ he hoped, adding that less cash payment helped in traceability and tractability of money.

 Mahjubin Shahnaz, a Mastercard cardholder from Dhaka Bank PLC, received a luxurious four-day trip to Sydney as the first prize. 50 winners also received exciting prizes, such as travel, electronics, and lifestyle vouchers from leading merchants in Bangladesh.

During the campaign period, the cardholders with four domestic or international transactions worth Tk 1,000 received additional points, and winners were selected based on the number of points they earned.

The AB Bank PLC, Al-Arafah Islami Bank PLC, BRAC Bank PLC, Bank Asia PLC, Eastern Bank PLC, Dhaka Bank PLC, Dutch Bangla Bank PLC, Islami Bank PLC, Mutual Trust Bank PLC, National Bank Limited, Prime Bank PLC, Premier Bank PLC, Pubali Bank PLC, City Bank PLC, United Commercial Bank PLC, Southeast Bank PLC, Standard Chartered Bank, and Lankabangla Finance PLC were the partner banks and financial institutions associated with the campaign.
