
The Bangladesh Bank is likely to ask banks not to charge any fine for late payment of loans and credit card bills considering general holidays and internet blackout in the country in the past few days.
BB officials said that due to a three-day general holiday from Sunday and the internet blackout since July 18 amid unrests centring quota reform protests, bank customers were unable to make payments against their loans and credit cards.
So, the central bank may ask banks today not charge fine on late payment of loan instalments and credit card bills, they said.
BB executive director Saiful Islam told 抖阴精品 that the central bank would make decision on this matter when the office reopened.
Selim RF Hussain, managing director and CEO of BRAC Bank, told 抖阴精品 that BRAC Bank had already informed its clients through short message service that it had decided not to charge any fee or interest for late payment of loans and credit card bills considering general holidays and country-wide internet blackout.
Selim, also the chairman of the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh, said that if already charged, the bank would refund the money to the customer concerned.
City Bank also informed its customers that the bank would not charge any fines for delayed payments of loan instalment.
The government imposed a curfew across the country from midnight past Friday, as the unrests centring quota reform protests in the country were on the surge and more than one hundred people were killed and several thousand others got injured till Friday in clashes across the country, starting from July 16.
The government also announced general holiday for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, keeping most of the offices, including banks, shut.
