
So far, a total of 4,242 factory units of various industrial hubs and export processing zones have paid their festival allowances as of Sunday ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest festivals for the Muslims, according to the Industrial Police data.
The IP data also stated that about 43.81 per cent factories have already cleared festival allowances to the workers so far, where 5,441 factories of total 9,683 units yet to pay festival allowances.
Moreover, according to the industrial police data, so far 849 factory units cleared their wages for the month of May.
Meanwhile, according to the Bangladesh Labour Act, wages must be paid within 7 working days after the end of the wage period.
As the Eid-ul-Azha is scheduled to be celebrated on June 7, maximum industrial would be closed around June 3-5.
Lion portion factory units of the readymade garment sector, the highest export earner of the country, already cleared the festival allowances, according to the monitoring report of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
Earlier, on May 24, industrial police said that the payment of wages and festival allowances for the workers in 198 readymade garment factories remains uncertain ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Talking to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, Babul Akhter, General secretary of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, said that they expect all the factory units must clear their full wages for May and festival allowances by June 3.

‘Moreover, we also demand all the factory units must go on Eid holidays on June 5, so that the workers can travel their Eid journey safely and comfortably,’ he added.
Earlier, on May 19, Home Affairs Adviser Lt General (Retd) Jahangir Alam instructed the manufacturers to clear the workers’ May wages and festival allowances ahead of Eid-ul-Azha between June 1 and 3.
He also urged the factory owners to accept the workers’ and warned that law enforcement agencies will take action if any attempt is made to block roads or disrupt public movement over irrational demands.
