
A total of 1,179 readymade garment and textile factories of various industrial hubs of the country are yet to clear half or full wages for March ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, said the latest report of the Industrial Police.
Earlier, the Labour Ministry instructed the RMG and textile millers to clear half or full wages of March in advance ahead of Eid.
According to the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, workers’ wages from the previous month must be paid within the first seven working days of the following month.
The report said that, so far, 1,711 or 59.2 per cent of the total 2,890 operational factories had cleared half or full wages for March.
Moreover, 2,591 factories or 90 per cent of the total have already cleared payment of festival allowances for Eid-ul-Fitr, while 299 factory units are yet to do so.
Eid-ul-Fitr, on the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, is expected to be held at the end of March subject to moon-sighting.
Among the operational factories, 102 RMG and textile units are yet to clear their workers’ wages for February, according to a report from the Industrial Police on Friday.
The IP said that there were currently 2,890 operational factories under the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association and the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority.
According to the IP report, 2,788 factories have paid February wages to their workers.
Meanwhile, the IP data said that the country had 9,695 factories, including jute mills and others.
According to Industrial Police data, 8,039 factories or 83 per cent of the total have cleared festival allowances and 5,343 or 55 per cent factories have cleared the wages for March.
Meanwhile, the BGMEA has announced that wage and allowance payments for sector workers will be completed ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.Â
Following BGMEA’s request, the government took advance measures, instructing banks to release incentive funds, said a BGMEA statement issued on Thursday night.
BGMEA administrator Mohammad Anwar Hossain expressed his gratitude to the garment sector’s entrepreneurs for their dedicated efforts to ensure the timely payment of wages and bonuses, despite facing challenges.
However, according to the BGMEA Factory Monitoring Report on Friday, about 2,054 units or 97 per cent of the 2,106 operational RMG factories in the Dhaka and Chattogram zones have cleared their disbursement of Eid allowances.
Moreover, 99.62 per cent or 2,099 factories have cleared their February wages.
A total of 1,960 factories, or 93 per cent, have cleared their half or full wages of March to the workers, said the monitoring report.
