Leaders of the National Garment Workers Federation on Friday at a rally in front of the National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar called on the interim government and owners of garment factories to take steps to ensure maternity leave for women garment workers.

Amirul Haque Amin president of the organisation said that more than 35 lakh women workers were working in the garment factories across the country.

They must get maternity leave during their pregnancy, he said.

But in many garment factories the managements declined to give the leave, Amirul Haque Amin alleged.  General secretary of the organisation Rafiqul Islam, central leaders Jesmin Begum, Camelia Hasan and others spoke at the rally.

Several hundred garment workers from Savar, Ashulia and Gazipur attended the rally, a press release of the organisation said.
