The government has waived demurrage charges for seven days for imported containers carrying accessories and raw materials for the readymade garment sector, which could not be delivered from the Chattogram port due to disruptions caused by unrests over the quota reform movement and the curfew imposed by the government.

The shipping ministry issued a circular on Tuesday waiving the charges for consignments arriving at the port between July 16 and August 5.

The ministry made the decision in response to a request from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, according to the circular.

It also stated that to avail the waiver of port charges, importers must release their goods by August 14.

BGMEA president SM Mannan Kochi held a meeting with state minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday and urged to waive the port demurrage charges for containers belonging to the garment sector.

The request was made because the goods could not be cleared on time due to the unrests centring quota reform movement, the curfew, and a lack of internet connectivity to the ports and customs servers in the country.
