
Over two dozens, including six police members, were injured as two groups of pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party professional leaders clashed over the annual general meeting at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.
Police came under attack at about 12:10pm on Saturday when followers of IEB president Riazul Islam, also a former BNP science and technology affairs secretary and former IEB honourary general secretary Muhammad Quayyum also former Jatiytabadi Chhtra Dal BUET unit president, locked in a clash over the AGM, said police officials.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Khalid Mansur said that six policemen were injured as protesters threw brickchips targeting police members.
‘We have detained one for interrogation,’ the OC added.
IEB president Riazul Islam said that Quayyum led the attack with goons using the name of the BNP.
‘We are holding the AGM to hand over power through an election. But Quayyum attacked us suddenly to foil the AGM,’ Riazul alleged.
He said that 17 engineers were injured in the attack.
Muhammad Quayyum could not be reached over the phone for comment despite repeated attempts.
