Politicians called on all opposition parties at a commemoration meeting on Saturday to wage a parallel movement against the ruling Awami League government in a bid to force it to resign.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD, a partner of Ganatantra Mancha, organised the discussion at the National Press Club to mark the first death anniversary of Serajul Alam Khan, which will be observed today.
Political thinker Serajul Alam Khan, one of the key organisers of the war of independence in 1971, wanted to establish an oppression-free democratic country, where people would enjoy their democratic rights, they said.
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, urged the opposition political parties to come forward and implement the ideals of Serajul Alam Khan.
JSD president ASM Abdur Rob, who chaired the discussion, said that the Awami League government had introduced a mafia state where corrupts and looters were controlling the economy of the country.
He called on all to wage mass movements to end the Awami misrule.
Bangladesh JSD president Sharif Nurul Ambia also made a similar call.
Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that a faction of JSD also wanted to form a national unity to implement the ideals of Serajul Alam Khan.
But we do not want to form a national unity, including the Awami League, Manna said.
Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that the people of the country were ready to participate in the movement against the government.
Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that Serajul Alam Khan was a patriotic politician who wanted to establish the rights of the common people.
Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu said that they must ensure that the rights of the people are respected in the country and good governance prevails.
Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum said that they would formulate a ruling system where the government would be compelled to ensure the rights of the people.
JSD senior vice-president Tania Rob, general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon, and central leader Kamal Uddin Parwari spoke among others at the programme.
