SEA-ME-WE 5, the country鈥檚 second submarine cable under the Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC, broke on Friday midnight, causing internet disruption countrywide.

The western side of the SMW-5 cable, 440 kilometres away from Singapore, got disconnected suddenly at about 12.00am, resulting all Kuakata-Singapore-bound traffic over the cable closed, said a press release issued by the BSCPLC on Saturday.

Steps had already been taken to repair the cable and establish reconnection quickly by the SMW-5 consortium, read the release.

Meanwhile, internet services are currently being provided in the country through SMW-4 submarine and ITC facilities located in Cox鈥檚 Bazar and significant amount of bandwidth isolated from SMW-5 is being shifted to SMW-4 cables.

However, internet speeds may remain slow until the SMW-5 submarine cable is repaired and restored.

The BSCPLC authorities sincerely apologise for the temporary inconvenience to the customers.
