India has reiterated that it expects the forthcoming general election in Bangladesh would be inclusive and participatory.

‘On elections in Bangladesh, you know our point of view. We have said that as a democracy we would welcome holding of elections, that is inclusive and includes everybody in its fold,’ said India’s external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a weekly briefing in New Delhi on July 17, according to the transcript available on the web site of the ministry.

He made the remarks while replying to a question from an Indian journalist on the forthcoming general elections in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman at a meeting in London in June agreed that the next general elections could be held in mid-February 2026.

The two leaders reached the agreement during a meeting between them at The Dorchester hotel in London, where Yunus was staying as part of his four-day official visit to the United Kingdom.

Besides, Jaiswal talked about violence in Gopalganj.

Activists of the Awami League in Gopalganj district town clashed with members of the law enforcement agencies on July 16 over a National Citizen Party’s rally in the town to mark the first anniversary of the July uprising that ousted the authoritarian Awami League regime on August 5, 2024.

At least five people died and scores were injured due to the clash in Gopalganj.

‘We follow all developments in our region closely and take cognisance of what is happening there, and accordingly we take action if required on our side,’ he said while replying to a question from another journalist.
