A total of 10,202 individual taxpayers filed their income tax returns online on the very first day of the launch of the e-return filing process for the financial year 2025–26, according to the National Board of Revenue.
Earlier, finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed officially inaugurated the electronic return (e-return) submission system in a seminar at the NBR office on Monday.
According to a press release issued by the NBR on Tuesday, the number of returns submitted on the first day marked nearly a fivefold increase compared with the same period last year, when 2,344 returns were filed on September 9, 2024.
The surge followed a special directive issued by the NBR on August 3, which made online filing mandatory for all individual tax payers except senior citizens aged 65 and above, persons with disabilities, Bangladeshi citizens living abroad, and the legal representatives of deceased taxpayers.
The directive also allowed flexibility for those who encounter genuine difficulties in completing the e-return registration process.
The directive instructed that such taxpayers could submit a written application with proper justification to their respective tax circle by October 31, 2025.
Upon approval by the concerned additional or joint commissioner of taxes, they would be allowed to file their returns manually.
In 2024, when online return submission was made mandatory for individual taxpayers to a limited extent, more than 1.7 million taxpayers submitted their e-returns online.
From this year, taxpayers can conveniently pay their taxes from home using bank transfers, debit cards, credit cards, bKash, Rocket, Nagad, or other mobile financial service apps.
After submission, they could instantly print their e-return acknowledgement slip and, by providing the necessary details, also generate and print their income tax certificate automatically.
To support taxpayers throughout the process, NBR has established round-the-clock assistance via call centres and digital platforms to address any queries or technical issues related to online filing, according to the press release.
On Monday, the finance adviser inaugurated the online e-return for all individual taxpayers for the 2025-26 tax year during a seminar on the activities of income tax, VAT, and Customs in the national budget for FY26.
In the seminar, regarding the e-return of income tax, he highly commended the NBR for this commendable job.
