Tanvir Islam took five wickets as Bangladesh clinched a thrilling 16-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second ODI to level the series 1-1 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday.

Chasing 249, Sri Lanka were all out for 232 in 48.5 overs despite Janith Liyanage’s 78 off 85 balls.Ìý

Tanvir became only the fourth Bangladeshi spinner after Abdur Razzak, Shakib Al Hasan, and Taijul Islam to take an away five-for with his 5-39.

Bangladesh spinners, led by Tanvir, took control after Sri Lanka made a brisk 75-2 in the first 10 overs thanks to Kusal Mendis’ 56 off 31.Ìý

Sri Lanka managed just 99-6 in the overs between the 11th and 40th before Liyanage added 58 runs with Dushmantha Chameera for the ninth wicket after getting two reprieves.

Part-timer Shamim Hossain took 1-22 in his nine overs, while captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz had 1-37.Ìý

Earlier, Bangladesh posted 248 in 45.5 overs thanks to fifties from Parvez Hossain and Towhid Hridoy.Ìý

Left-handed Parvez was instrumental in his first fifty innings (67 off 69). But Bangladesh were pegged back with three wickets before Hridoy and Shamim Hossain took control briefly.Ìý

Shamim (22) and Jaker Ali (23 off 40) got the starts but failed to carry on. Bangladesh became 212-7 when Hridoy (51 off 69) was run out, and soon they became 218-9.Ìý

But Tanzim Hasan’s unbeaten 33 runs off 21 balls helped Bangladesh to post a challenging total on a ground where the teams batting second had lost the previous five matches.

Asitha Fernando took 4-35 runs, while Wanindu Hasaranga took three.

The third and final ODI will be played on July 8 in Pallekele.Ìý
