Bangladesh were knocked out of the ongoing T20 World Cup on Saturday as they conceded a sorry defeat to India by 50 runs in their second Super Eight game in Antigua.
Bangladesh did not look like they were ever in the game from the very start as India attacked from the very start and Bangladesh could not cope, leading to a score of 196-5, and in reply, they could only hobble their way to 146-5.
This defeat leaves Bangladesh on zero points after their two matches at this stage, meaning they can no longer qualify for the semi-finals.
They failed to compete in any of the three departments as their bowling attack was already on the backfoot with Taskin Ahmed being left out, which led to them conceding the most run in an innings in this tournament.
Hardik Pandya top-scored for India with an unbeaten 50 off 27 balls, while Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant contributed with 37 and 36, respectively.
For Bangladesh, Tanzim Hasan Sakib was once again the pick of the bowlers as he picked up two wickets for 32 runs, and Rishad Hossain, despite being expensive, picked up two wickets as well.
In reply, Bangladesh were never in the chase. Their opening pair of Liton Das and Tanzid Hasan Tamim added 35 runs – the most for Bangladesh in this tournament – but it took 27 balls when the asking rate was almost 10.
Liton fell for 13 – another feather in his long list of failures – when he tried to drag Pandya from outside the off stump for a six over square leg, and Tanzid limped to a 31-ball 29, almost ending the chase even before it began, before being trapped LBW by Kuldeep Yadav.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 40 off 32 balls, but that was nowhere near the asking rate, and with no other batter supporting him or attacking, the Bangladesh chase fell flat.
After Towhid Hridoy and Shakib both fell cheaply, Shanto also followed suit, and Bangladesh only managed to reduce the defeat margin courtesy of a late cameo from Rishad, who scored 24 off 10 balls.
However, it was too little, too late, meaning the Tigers could only drag themselves to 50 runs away from the India total and crash out of the tournament.
Kuldeep picked up three wickets for India, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh picked up two each.
