Representatives of eight Islamic parties on Friday demanded that the reform-centric referendum be held before the 13th national election, scheduled for early February 2026.

At a joint press conference at the Al Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka, they said holding the referendum alongside the JS elections would undermine the significance of the state reform process.

They arranged the briefing in response to Thursday’s speech by the interim government’s chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on the issuance of the July National Charter Implementation (Reform of Constitution) Order 2025.

On Thursday evening, President Mohammed Shahabuddin issued the order stating that a referendum on four questions would be held on the same day as the JS polls.

Speaking on behalf of the parties, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, ‘We appreciate the issuance of the order, but we strongly oppose holding the referendum on the same day as the JS elections.’

He urged the interim government to revise the order.

Central leaders of Jamaat, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islami Party, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party and Bangladesh Development Party were present.

Taher added that top leaders of the eight parties would meet on November 16 to decide their next course of action.
