The son of a Rajshahi court judge was stabbed to death at their home in the city’s Dabtala area on Thursday afternoon, allegedly by a man known to the family, said the police.
The victim, Tawshif Rahman Suman, 16, was the son of Abdur Rahman, a judge of the Rajshahi Metropolitan and Sessions Judge’s Court.
The police arrested the suspected attacker, Limon Mia, 35, son of HM Solaiman Shahid of Modonerpara village under Fulchhari upazila in Gaibandha.
Limon, who was also injured during the attack, is undergoing treatment under police custody at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
The police and family members said that Limon entered the judge’s residence around 3:00pm and attacked Suman with a knife, leaving him critically injured.
Tasmin Nahar Lucy, Suman’s mother, was also hurt as she rushed to save her son.
Later, both were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Suman dead.
The attack came a week after Suman’s mother, Tasmin Nahar, had filed a general diary against Limon with the Jalalabad police in Sylhet on November 6, accusing him of issuing repeated death threats to her family.
The Supreme Court on Thursday said that it would closely monitor the investigation into the murder of Rajshahi District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman’s son and the knife attack that injured his wife at their official residence in Rajshahi.
The apex court expected the law enforcement agencies to take proper steps to identify the motive, bring the perpetrators to justice.
On behalf of the Supreme Court and the judiciary, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed expressed deep condolences over the killing of the judge’s son and prayed for the speedy recovery of the mother, according to a press release issued by public relations officer Md Shofiqul Islam.
‘The Chief Justice has emphasised accuracy and transparency in every step of the investigation,’ the release added.
In a separate statement, law adviser Asif Nazrul urged law enforcement agencies to arrest those involved and ensure a thorough investigation into the attack while also expressing his condolences.
Pranab Ray, sub-inspector of the Jalalabad police and the investigation officer of the GD, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Limon was arrested after the complaint and later sent to jail through a court.
According to the GD, obtained by ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, Tasmin stated that she met Limon through a member of the Quantum Foundation and had helped him financially several times as he claimed to be in hardship.
She alleged that when she stopped assisting him, Limon began threatening her over phone.
‘At about 10:20am on November 3, Limon called my daughter over phone and threatened to kill her and other family members,’ the GD read.
Gaziur Rahman, deputy commissioner for Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime and additional deputy commissioner for crime, operations and media of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said that Limon was known to the victim family.
‘We suspect the attack was linked to a past row. Details will be confirmed after further investigation,’ he said.
