Professor Ali Riaz, the vice-chair of the defunct National Consensus Commission, left Bangladesh for the United States early Monday.

He would return to Bangladesh on November 15, said a government official who served the commission on deputation.

According to the official, the NCC vice-chair left Bangladesh on a US-bound flight at 3:00am on Monday.聽

Professor Riaz, who had earlier served as the chief of the Constitution Reform Commission, is a distinguished professor of political science at Illinois State University in the United States.

Earlier, on September 20, Ali Riaz went to the USA and came back on September 30.

After the fall of the Awami League regime last year, the interim government initially formed six reform commissions and appointed Ali Riaz the chief of the Constitution Reform Commission on October 7.

The commission submitted its final report to the government on January 15.

On February 12, the interim government formed the seven-member National Consensus Commission with chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus as its chair and Professor Riaz as the vice-chair.

Formally beginning its task on February 15, the consensus commission had been assigned to formulate the July National Charter 2025 with a broad consensus of the contemporary political parties in six months.

With notes of dissent from several political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in the charter and the abstention of the National Citizen Party, the commission held the charter signing ceremony on October 17.

On October 28, the National Consensus Commission finished its task by submitting its road map to implement the charter. The NCC term expired on October 31.聽

However, the road map stirred criticisms among political parties and experts as it skipped acknowledging the notes of dissent and eventually widened divisions among the political parties.
