BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday stressed that there is no longer any possibility of holding a referendum before the upcoming national parliamentary elections, urging that it be conducted on the day of the vote instead.

Speaking at a discussion marking the 53rd founding anniversary of the Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at the National Press Club, Fakhrul said, ‘We have clearly stated that the referendum should take place on the day of the election itself. Holding it beforehand is no longer feasible.’

He also warned that a faction is trying to disrupt the election process and mislead the public, while reaffirming BNP’s support for holding the national election in February 2026 as announced by the interim government’s chief adviser, Prof Muhammad Yunus.

Describing BNP as a party committed to political reform, Fakhrul recalled the contributions of the party’s founders in restoring democratic rights and implementing political and economic reforms.

He reiterated BNP’s plan to form a national government after the election with longstanding allies who have supported the party in its movements and struggles over the past 15 years.

The event also featured remarks from Nagarik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, and Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju.
