
At least 502 people were killed and 964 others were injured in 504 road accidents across Bangladesh in September, according to a report by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.
Motorcycle accidents caused significant numbers of deaths and accidents in the month, said the report released on Tuesday.
It said that 199 people (39.64 per cent of deaths) were killed and 188 people (19.5 per cent of injured) were injured in 191 road accidents involving motorcycles.
Forty-six people were killed and three others were injured in 50 railway accidents.
In 13 waterways accidents, 17 people were killed, 15 were injured and three remained missing.
The association issued a press release with a summary of its monthly report, which was based on media reports.
Of the fatalities, 134 were transport workers, including drivers, 102 pedestrians, 56 students, eight teachers, seven political leaders and activists and five police personnel. Of the fatalities, 49 were children.
Division-wise, the highest number of road accidents, 126, occurred in Dhaka division, killing 122 people and injuring 216 ones.
In Barishal division, the lowest number of road accidents, 22, occurred, killing 27 people and injuring 47 others.
Regarding the nature of the accidents, the highest, 48.8 per cent, was caused when vehicles crushed onto other things. Next comes 28.57 per cent by head-on collisions, 17.85 per cent by vehicles falling into roadside ditches as the drivers lost control over the vehicles, 3.76 per cent by other reasons, 0.59 per cent by collision between trains, and 0.39 per cent by scarves getting entangled into wheels.
According to the report, the highest, 45.03 per cent, road accidents took place on national highways, followed by 25.39 per cent on feeder roads and 24 per cent on regional highways.
Out of total accidents, 3.96 per cent occurred in the Dhaka Metropolitan City and 0.99 per cent in the Chattogram Metropolitan City.
