Unidentified assailants shot an activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to death in the Madunaghat area under Hathazari upazila in Chattogram on Tuesday.

The deceased is Abdul Hakim, 57, of Pachkhain village under Raozan upazila in the district.

The driver of Hakim’s car, Ilias Hossain, was also injured in the attack and was now undergoing treatment.

Hathazari police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Manjur Quader Bhuiyan said that the incident occurred at about 5:15pm when a group of assailants opened fire targeting Hakim while he had been travelling in a private car.

The incident left Hakim and the car driver, Ilias Hossain, injured.

Locals rescued the duo and rushed them to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram, where on-duty doctors declared Hakim dead, the OC said.

He said that they were trying to identify the attackers.

Chattogram north district Juba Dal vice-president Saber Sultan Kajol said Raozan upazila BNP activist Abdul Hakim was travelling from Chattogram city in a private car and met the fatal attack when his car reached Madunaghat.

The miscreants, wearing helmets on motorcycles, shot him before fleeing the scene, he said.

The police were primarily suspecting that another faction of the BNP in the upazila was behind the attack, as there had been a long-standing dispute between the two groups.
