As anthrax disease has been reported in various districts in the country, the Department of Livestock Services under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has taken urgent and coordinated activities to prevent and control the spread of the disease.
Anthrax is a bacterial zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from cattle to humans, said a press release on Sunday.
In this regard, the local livestock department in coordination with the local administration continues to organise various activities, including the cattle vaccination, health check-ups, street meetings and leaflet distribution.
Special initiatives have also been taken to monitor the affected areas at the field level, prevent the slaughter of sick animals and bring every animal on the farm under vaccination.
Under the One Health programme, public awareness activities are continuing in coordination with the local health department.
Officials of the Department of Livestock are also making the people aware through regular yard meetings and training workshops, urging not to slaughter sick animals, not to throw dead animals in open places or water but rather to bury them deeply and in case of any animal-related illness.
The Livestock Research Institute will soon provide about 3 million anthrax vaccines to Rangpur division, out of which 2 million vaccines will be sent to Rangpur and Gaibandha districts alone.
In nine upazilas of Rangpur, 1,67,000 cows have been vaccinated while 26,400 cows have been vaccinated so far in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha.
