Leaders and activists of the Awami League, the activities of which are banned, on Sunday brought out a flash procession in the  capital’s Bijoy Sarani area demanding resignation of the interim government.

Meanwhile, police arrested 13 leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated bodies in the 24 hours till 8:00am on the day in different parts of the capital in connection with various cases.


Tejgaon police station officer-in-charge Mobarak Hossain said that the AL activists brought out the procession around 1:45pm in Bijoy Sarani area.

On information, police rushed to the spot and detained one person named Mirajul Islam with banner, he added.

Witnesses said that the procession started under the Bijoy Sarani metro rail station and moved along the road in front of the Jatiya Sangsad building before terminating at Farmgate.

OC Mobarak Hossain told reporters, ‘Around 1:45pm, a group of Awami League leaders and activists began a procession near the Bijoy Sarani metro rail station and was moving towards Farmgate.’

Earlier on Friday, leaders and activists of the party and its associate organisations brought out flash processions after the Jumma prayers in Tejgaon’s Nabisco and Dhanmondi areas.

On August 31 evening, some activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League brought out a flash procession in Dhanmondi area and had left the scene before police reached there.

Meanwhile, police arrested 13 leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated bodies, including Gopalganj Chhatra League general secretary Amir Hamza, during the 24 hours till 8:00 on Sunday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police detectives arrested them in different drives in the city, according to the DMP media cell.

The arrestees are publicity and publication secretary of Kafrul Thana Mahila AL Nahida Noor Sweety, Motijheel thana unit BCL vice-president Miraj Sikder, AL activist Md Bayezid, Uttara west thana Sramik League leader Mohor Ali, Dhaka University Chhatra League former vice-president Sheikh Ibne Sadiq, Dhaka south AL former organising secretary Aminul Islam Biplob, Kotwali thana ward 35 AL freedom fighter affairs secretary Nitai Ghosh, AL activist Md Shamim Sikder, Bangshal thana ward 32 Swechchhasebak League general secretary Imtiaz Uddin Sumit, Gopalganj sadar upazila BCL joint convener Md Shakib Kazi , Rupnagar thana BCL joint convener Md Nadim Sheikh  and Juba League worker Md Rezwan Howlader.

Several cases were filed against all the arrested persons with various police stations on specific charges, the DMP statement said.

It said that the arrested leaders and workers of the AL and its affiliated bodies were involved in an attempt to create panic in public by organising and disrupting the law and order.

Ousted prime minister and AL president Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, after her government was overthrown amid a student–led mass uprising.

Three days after the fall of the AL government, on August 8, an interim government was formed with Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus as its head.

Since then, many senior AL ministers, state ministers, influential former lawmakers, and leaders of allied parties have been arrested in connection with various cases filed over crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

Most of the top AL leaders are in hiding.

On October 23 past year, the interim government banned the BCL under the Anti-Terrorism Act on allegations of its involvement in breaching public security in various ways in the past 15 years.

In May this year, the government banned all activities by the Awami League until the completion of the trials of its leaders and activists for allegedly perpetrating atrocities in the July uprising.
