Derailment of a compartment of a passenger train near the airport station in the capital on Tuesday disrupted rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of the Bangladesh for about two and a half hours.
Almost all trains from and to Dhaka are currently running behind the schedules due to the derailment, said Bangladesh Railway officials on Tuesday.
No causality was reported.
The disruption caused serious suffering to the passengers as trains were behind schedules and many were seen stranded at different rail stations.
Anowar Hossain, station master of Dhaka rail station, popularly known as Kamlapur rail station, said that one compartment of Burimari Express on the Lalmonirhat-Dhaka route derailed at about 11:30am on the day when it was entering the station.
Explaining that the Kamlapur railway station had two lines, one for departure from Dhaka and the other for entering Dhaka, the station master said that the derailment halted train operation on the line for entering Dhaka.
Train movement on the departure line continued, while the trains to enter Dhaka were also using the same line after the derailment halted train movement on the designated line.
‘Following the incident, rescue operation is ongoing to remove the derailed compartment,’ Anowar Hossain said sometime after the incident, adding that no one got injured in the incident.
Railway’s Dhaka divisional transportation officer Fuad Hossain said that after removing the derailed compartment train movement on the other line was resumed at around 2:00pm.
As trains ran by single line for the time being, schedules of some trains had been briefly disrupted, he added.
For example, the Silkcity Express on the Dhaka-Rajshahi route was scheduled to start from the capital at 2:45pm, but it left Dhaka at 5:15pm on the day, running around two hours and a half behind schedule.
