Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Monday paid courtesy calls on president Mohammed Shahabuddin and chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
According to officials, during his meetings with the president and the chief adviser, the army chief briefed them on his recent official visit to China as well as on the country’s law and order, and the army’s role in maintaining security.
The chief adviser’s press wing in a statement said that Yunus, during the meeting, discussed the army’s role in assisting the civil administration under the present circumstances.
He thanked the military for its continued contribution to the maintenance of the law and order.
The chief adviser emphasised the need to streamline this role, including the establishment of a clearly defined command structure and a close coordination among all forces in the coming months leading up to the elections, said the statement.
‘I have made a solemn commitment to the nation to deliver an election that would stand out in terms of voter turnout, participation of new and women voters, global confidence in safety and security, and its atmosphere as a celebration of democracy and rule of law,’ the chief adviser said.
General Wakar, in turn, assured the chief adviser of his full cooperation with the interim government, according to the statement.
He urged the chief adviser not to pay attention to rumours circulating around.
‘The entire army is committed to making the government successful in all its initiatives and programmes,’ said the General.
According to the sources, Professor Yunus and General Wakar also held a one-on-one meeting. But what was discussed could not be ascertained.
Meanwhile, law adviser Asif Nazrul told reporters later on the day that the army chief occasionally met with the chief adviser and the president, adding that he did not think there was anything to worry about.
Replying to a question, the adviser said that he was not aware of any meeting between the army chief and the chief justice.
Referring to recent media reports and online speculation on the matter, Asif Nazrul said that there was no reason to be concerned about such rumours.
The Inter-Services Public Relations directorate in a statement said that the Chief of Army Staff paid courtesy calls on chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guest house Jamuna and later on president Mohammed Shahabuddin at the Bangabhaban.
During the meetings, the army chief shared his experiences and key outcomes from various discussions held during his recent official visit to China.
He also exchanged views on the overall law and order situation in the country and the army’s role in improving it.
General Waker-uz-Zaman assured the president and the chief adviser that the Bangladesh Army would continue to provide full support to strengthen the law and order and ensure public safety.
In addition, the army chief briefed them on ongoing development activities within the army and outlined future plans for its modernisation and capacity-building.
General Waker had travelled to China on August 20 on an official visit and returned on August 27.
