At least 10 people, including police personnel and students, were injured after a section of the Dhaka College students and a group of the Dhaka City College students clashed again in Science Laboratory area in the capital on Thursday.

The clashes occurred after some City College students reportedly beat up several Dhaka College students over seating arrangements at a coaching centre on Tuesday, according to police.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner for Ramna zone Masud Alam said that students from the two colleges got locked into the clash at about 11:30am.

‘Then, chase and counter chase occurred several times while students from the both sides hurled brickbats at each other,’ he said, adding that at least six students and four police personnel were injured in the clash.

New Market police station officer-in-charge AKM Mahfuzul Haque said that among the injured students, four are from Dhaka City  College and two are from Dhaka College.

‘Police used some sound grenades to disperse the students from the road. The situation was brought under control at about 2:00pm,’ the police official said.

According to police, more than 100 clashes have occurred since October past year among students of Dhaka College, Dhaka City College and Ideal College under the jurisdictions of New Market, Dhanmondi and Kalabagan police stations, disrupting communications and impacting businesses in the capital’s busy New Market-Science Lab area.

The road is used by thousands of people every day as it connects other areas of the city with the Old Dhaka area and there are several businesses in the area.

DMP deputy commissioner Masud said that the students got locked into clashes over ‘silly’ issues with most of them joining the clashes without knowing the causes, creating panic and fear among the general public.

‘We have sat several times with the college authorities, where authorities set rules to end these clashes among the students. But, the students do not follow these rules and end up in fights again,’ he said.

Masud also said that a meeting might be held tomorrow among law enforcers and authorities in the presence of the students to discuss about permanent solutions to the conflict.

Authorities held similar meeting in April after several dozen, including 20 police personnel, were hurt in clashes between a group of Dhaka College students and a section of Dhaka City College students in the area on April 22.

On April 15, students of Dhaka College and Dhaka City College got locked into a clash allegedly over an incident of damaging a student identity card.
