Md Sarwar Alam | Press release

The government on Monday withdrew Sylhet deputy commissioner Muhammad Sher Mahbub Murad amid widespread controversy over illegal stone extraction in the northeastern district.

He was attached to the Ministry of Public Administration as an officer on special duty.

Sher Mahbub has been replaced by Md Sarwoer Alam, who is currently serving as the private secretary to adviser Asif Nazrul at the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.

The public administration ministry on Monday issued separate notifications in this regard.

The change in the district administration’s top post came amid much-talked-about allegations of large-scale stone looting from Bholaganj, Jaflong, Rangpani and other areas of Sylhet, with the local administration allegedly remaining silent over the massive looting of stones, affecting ecological balance in the area.

During an inspection at Bholaganj, the Anti-Corruption Commission also raised concerns about administrative accountability in dealing with the issue.

Against this backdrop, DC Sher Mahbub was withdrawn on Monday and Sarwoer Alam, a 27th batch Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) cadre officer who joined government service in November 2008, was appointed the new DC.

Sarwoer Alam gained wide recognition while he was an executive magistrate with the Rapid Action Battalion for conducting more than 300 drives against food adulteration and irregularities. His bold actions earned him praise from the public.

In November 2020, he was transferred to the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare as a senior assistant secretary.

After being denied promotion three times, he was finally elevated to the rank of deputy secretary on August 14, 2024.
