Md Sarwar Alam | Press release

Amid widespread controversy over illegal stone extraction in Sylhet, the government has withdrawn deputy commissioner of Sylhet Muhammad Sher Mahbub Murad and attached him to the public administration ministry as an officer on special duty.

The government also appointed Md Sarwar Alam, deputy secretary at the expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment ministry, as the new DC of Sylhet, according to a notification issued by the public administration ministry on Monday.

Recently, allegations surfaced that large-scale stone looting took place in Bholaganj, Jaflong, Rangpani and other areas of Sylhet, while the administration allegedly remained inactive.

During an inspection at Bholaganj, the Anti-Corruption Commission also raised concerns about administrative accountability in dealing with the issue.

Against this backdrop, DC Sher Mahbub Murad was withdrawn, while Sarwar Alam, a 27th batch BCS (Administration) cadre officer who joined government service in November 2008, was appointed as the new DC.

Sarwar Alam gained wide recognition while he was an executive magistrate of the Rapid Action Battalion for conducting more than 300 drives against food adulteration and irregularities. His bold actions earned him praise from the public.

In November 2020, he was transferred to the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare as a senior assistant secretary. After being denied promotion three times, he was finally elevated to the rank of deputy secretary on August 14, 2024.
