
At least 10 people, including five in Chattogram, were killed and four more were injured in five road accidents in five districts on Monday.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Chattogram reported that five people were killed and four others injured when a pickup van crashed into a stationary covered van on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in City Gate area under the Akbar Shah police in the port city at around 4:45am.
The deceased are Roni Das, 25, Akash Das, 26, Ajit Das, 24, Jewel Das, 18, and Mohammad Sohel, 32, all from Sitakunda upazila of the district.
Akbar Shah police officer-in-charge (investigation) Syed Omar said that the victims were fish traders who were traveling from Sitakunda to Chattogram’s Fishery Ghat to buy fish.
There were three others, including the driver, in the driver’s cabin and seven in the rear side of the van, the officer said.
Three of the victims died on the spot and two more succumbed on the way to hospital.Â
The four seriously injured were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
An unnatural death case has been filed and the bodies were handed over to families, the police officer said, adding that pickup driver Sohel fled the scene.
In Pabna, the police recovered bodies of two unidentified women from a road at Choubaria Uttar Para under Bhangura upazila early Monday.
Bhangura police officer-in-charge Md Shafiqul Islam said that the women seemed between 50 and over 60 years old and from the look of their belongings they seemed to be beggars.
Mosque goers found the bodies, he said, adding that the bodies’ condition implied of a road accident involving some heavy vehicles sometime around Fajr prayers.
On information, they recovered the bodies and sent to Pabna General Hospital for autopsies, Shafiqul added.    Â
In Dhaka city, a motorcyclist was killed after an oil-laden tank lorry hit his vehicle on Rampura Bridge at around 9:30am.
The deceased is Mohammad Nazmul Islam, 40, son of Mohammad Nurul Islam, from Narayanpur village under the Jibonnagar police in Chuadanga district.
Victim’s colleague Mohammad Iqbal Hossain said that Nazmul was working for Provita Group as deputy manager.
Iqbal said that Nazmul was declared dead at around 10:30am after he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
DMCH police camp in-charge Mohammad Faruque said that they seized the lorry. Â
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur, an imam of a local mosque was killed when his motorbike hit a roadside tree on Bashkandi-Sheikhpur road in Dakshin Bashkandi union early Monday. The deceased is Abdur Rahman, 37, son of Hakim Ali Howlader, a resident of the same area.
He was declared dead when local people took him to Shibchar Upazila Health Complex.
Shibchar police officer-in-charge Md Rakibul Islam said that the body was handed over to his relatives.
BSS also reported that in Lohagara upazila of Narail, a woman died on the spot when a truck hit her on Kalna-Lohagara-Narail road near T Char-Kalna Primary School at around 2:00pm.
The deceased is Fatema Begum, 45, wife of Takdir Hossain Mollah of Char-Kalna village of the upazila.
The accident happened as the truck driver allegedly lost control over the steering, said Md Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge of Lohagara police.
