Two students of a residential women’s madrasah at Gomostapur upazila in Chapainawabganj died early Saturday after they suddenly fell ill at night.

The deceased were identified as Tania Khatun, 12, daughter of Tariqul Islam of Lebudanga village, and Jamila Khatun, 10, daughter of Sabur Ali of Begpur village, both in Radhanagar union under the upazila.


Ashraf Ali, director of Shefali Begum Mohila Nurani Hafizia Madrasah, said that the girls suddenly fell ill and started vomiting in the middle of the night.

‘They were rushed to Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead around 4:30am,’ he added.

Abdul Alim, a medical officer at the health complex, said that Jamila was brought in dead, while Tania died while undergoing treatment.

‘Tania had marks on her leg and Jamila’s body showed a yellowish tinge, suggesting the possibility of snakebite or poisoning,’ he said, adding that the exact cause of death would be confirmed after post-mortem examination.

Wadud Alam, officer-in-charge of the Gomostapur police, said that a unnatural death case was lodged in this regard.
