A local leader of Awami League, Sarwar Hossain Nanu, died in jail custody in Munshiganj early Sunday morning.

Sarwar, 60, was Munshiganj sadar upazila unit joint general secretary of Awami League.

He fell ill at Munshiganj jail at about 3:00am Sunday after which he was taken to Munshiganj General Hospital where physicians declared him dead about 4:00am, said Munshiganj District Jail jail super Muhammad Enayetullah.

‘He had suffered chest pain about midnight. We gave him primary treatment at the jail,’ the jail super said.

‘Later, we took him to Munshiganj General Hospital where duty doctors declared him dad.’

Accused in cases in connection with murder and assault, Sarwar was sent to Munshiganj jail since May 5.

The AL leader was also a relative of former independent lawmaker for Munshiganj-3 constituency Faisal Biplob.

The government has recently banned all activities of Awami League until completion of the trial of atrocities carried out to quell the July uprising.

At least 22 people died in jail custody between April and June this year, increasing the number to 61 in the 11 months of the interim government, according to a report launched by human rights organisation Odhikar on July 24.
