At least one person was killed and 20 others were injured in an explosion at a filling station in Rangpur city on Saturday.

The deceased, Sohag, worked as an engineer at the CO Bazar LPG Auto Gas and Conversion Centre, a Liquefied Petroleum Gas station. Sohag along with several others were reportedly working to repair the gas tanker when it blew up.

Rangpur’s Kotwali police officer-in-charge Md Ataur Rahman said that an engineer working at the LPG station died with 20 others injured in the incident happened at about 12:00 noon.

‘The blast severely damaged at least 30 vehicles, including ambulances, private cars, and motorcycles, that were at the station. Doors, windows, and structures of several nearby buildings also collapsed,’ OC Ataur said.

Rangpur Fire Service Civil Defence deputy assistant director Badsha Masud Alam said that the station had been closed for the past seven days due to a leakage in the gas line.

‘Repairing was going on when the explosion occurred. The impact damaged numerous vehicles parked nearby, including two long-distance buses,’ he added.
